Super Castlevania IV!

March 15, 2007

So yea, the game I finished yesterday was the SNES classic, Super Castlevania IV.

I’ve been chipping away at this after I downloaded it on the VC because I thoughroughly enjoying Aria of Sorrow and Dawn of Sorrow on the Nintendo Handhelds, and thus used the Virtual Console for its best purpose, checking out the routes of a franchise you may have missed.

And it was a very enjoyable game, nothing quite like a bit of side ways hack and slashery, even if Simon moves at the speed of a tortoise, the enemies were designed around this and his whipping skills were well tailored to all situations.

Not only this, but the levels were quite nicely varied as well, giving a real sense of progression. Boss’ were also nicely designed, if some were a little easy.

The best thing about playing this game however, was seeing the enemies in their initial guises before their redesigns for the more recent titles. As well as some enemies downgrade from boss to mere normal enemy.

So, besides Simons power walking the game was pretty fun stuff, and I highly recommend it to any Wii owning retro head who can’t think what to download off the Virtual Console shop next.
